Nine-Eleven 2009

Today is the date which continues to live in Infamy: Nine-Eleven.

Today is the 8th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on civilized society…a date which was over-shadowed last year in Houston by Hurricane Ike, and this year, as thousands here continue to grapple with the after-effects of that storm, our nation continues to come to grips with attacks in two cities, and a hole in the ground in Pennsylvania, that remind us that freedom is not free, and we must be ever vigilant against enemies within and without.
Eight years ago at this moment (8:46a CDT), our world was changed forever. As we watched in disbelief, jets piloted by Islamic fanatics plowed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center, The Pentagon, and a farm field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, plunging themselves and their victims into the hereafter, and altering the lives of Americans forever.
Two wars have been spawned by those acts of cowardice; America is now an armed fortress, our citizens now herded onto aircraft after extreme scrutiny, and swarthy-complected males with exotic surnames are subjected to an extra measure of suspicion.
Through it all the American Spirit has remained dauntless, we have proven our resilience, and shown the world that even in our darkest hours, the American people know how to pull together, rebuild, and move on.
We will never forget.
We will never back down.

While the legacy of terror has given us pat-down searches, long lines at airports, and those stupid color-coded terror alerts, America’s legacy to world is an enduring devotion to freedom for all peoples, all faiths, all colors, and all nations.
